Tenuta Sant’ Antonio: The Castagnedi Brothers’ Passion in Wine

Four brothers and a dream that originated among their father’s vineyards in the heart of Valpolicella.

Armando, Tiziano, Paolo and Massimo Castagnedi: four brothers and a single passion that originated among their father’s vineyards at San Zeno di Colognola ai Colli, in Valpolicella where the most famous Veronese wines are made: Amarone, Valpolicella, Soave.

In 1989 they took the bold and far-sighted decision to buy a property in the Monti Garbi, laying the foundation for what has now become an agricultural estate known throughout the world, the producer of excellent wines, with more than one hundred farmed hectares and a state-of-the-art ageing facility.

For more than twenty years, quality has been their main mission. The world of wine is evolving continuously. Research in this field gives the production continuous inspiration and new possibilities regarding processing. The aim of Tenuta Sant’Antonio is to create products with a greater personality, focussing especially on more natural production.

Four or five years ago, Tenuta Sant’Antonio decided to try to undertake an experience that differs from the traditional process, both in the vineyard and in the winery, trying to make use of the latest information obtained from innovative research laboratories.

This experience began when Tenuta Sant’Antonio discovered the possibility of producing wines without using sulphites: this is how the Télos project began.

Care for the vineyard and respect of natural equilibrium. Organic and chemical fertilization (manure and fertilizers) has been replaced by the use of plant compost, obtained from the fermentation of twigs and branches, microorganisms and domestic wet waste.

Preference is given to a total grass cover without using chemical weed control, the integration of green manure and the mowing of weeds. In summer, the use of tradition products, such as copper and sulphur, for plant protection is greatly reduced and associated with sexual confusion techniques for pest control.

Tenuta Sant’Antonio uses selected yeasts obtained directly from grapes of its own production, nourished with organic feed and not with chemicals. The wine temperatures are monitored constantly and nitrogen is used in all stages of work as anti-oxidant protection.

All the wines, both white and red, always remain in contact with their fine lees and are kept in suspension by mixers located on the bottom of the stainless steel wine jars. In barrels, with the traditional bâtonnage method. The wines are cleaned only a few days before bottling.
